My thoughts on Tim Tebow

Unless you have been living under a rock this football season then you know who Tim Tebow is. You also know that he has come under some intense criticism for being outspoken concerning his faith. I wanted to take a little time to share my thoughts on Tim, Tebowing, and America’s response.

I must confess that I LOVE Tim Tebow!! Even though he comes from one of my least favorite college football teams I love his passion for God, life, and others. I love the fact that he is real and genuine in all that he says and does both on and off the field. I love that he has been a breath of fresh air in a sport filled with selfish, arrogant, ego manaics. I have been following Tim since his days with the Florida Gators and he has not changed for anything or anyone, that is what makes him so appealing. Being that he has always been outspoken about his love for Jesus and has taken criticism with great grace and humility it is no wonder he has caused such an uproar in America.

Tim either inspires you or pisses you off and I believe there is only one reason for it all; he lives out his faith with grace and humility and it either encourages us to do the same or pisses us off that we are not like him. Why else would there be such a big issue with him? Why are people so offended by someone who is just being himself? Why do we need someone to tear down and destory? I’m not talking about unbelievers!!! No. I’m talking about Christians who get all offeneded by Tim bowing after a touchdown or great game. They are offeneded that Tim thanks Jesus publicly after each game. I hear them use scriptures like Matthew 6:5 (“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.”) saying that Tim is actually a hypocrite and selfish for confessing his love for Jesus. Really?

What about this verse: Matthew 10:32 “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.”

I find it funny that Christians complain all the time about sports athletes being rude, arrogant, prideful, and poor role models, but when one comes along that is a GREAT role model we do our very best to destroy him!!!! WHY?!?!?!

Not only do I love Tim but I love that he has started a movement of Tebowing!! Yeah, I’m sure people are not really praying or thanking God when they do it, but what if only a few are? What if Tim has inspired people to begin to thank God a little more often? What if Tim is inspiring a nation or pray? That may sound a little crazy but what if? While many may disagree with me I find that not only is Tim refreshing as an athelete but inspiring as a fellow Christian.

Dear America,

Tim Tebow is a GREAT role model for our children in a league full of arrogant, prideful, ego manaics who act like children most of the time and get away with most criminal activity they are involved in. We would do well as a nation to encourage more athelets to live and act like Tim instead of doing our best to belittle and destroy him.

Until next time.

Much love,

Shawn
